Ocean Shores Fire Department responds to a multitude of fire, emergency medicine (EMS), rescue, hazardous materials, and motor vehicle accident calls. The fire department combats approximately a dozen working structure fires and another approximately dozen wildland or brush fires each year.The dynamic landscape creates urban interface wildfires during spring and summer months in the dune grass of the coast line. The consistent wind off of the Pacific Ocean can promote quick fire spread and the lack of fire breaks between structures can make for a dynamic fire ground.

ABOUT
The City of Ocean Shores has approximately 6,000 full-time residents and is heavily populated by tourists year round. The spring and summer months are the peak season with 15,000 to 30,000 visitors per day. The average age of residents is 57 years old.
Ocean Shores is a peninsula that is 6.6 miles long and 3 miles wide. The west part of the peninsula borders the Pacific Ocean and the east “bay side” borders Grays Harbor. Ocean Shores has 23 miles of fresh waterways, lakes and canals.
The Ocean Shores Fire Department is a combination fire department with 21 career personnel including a chief officer, an administrative assistant, a fire inspector and 18 firefighters with either paramedic or EMT licenses. Additional personnel consist of volunteer members. The department is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The career staff works a 48/96 schedule as per their IAFF local 2109 union contract. The department has three shifts, each with a captain and lieutenant.
As with most fire departments, 85% of the 911 responses are for emergency medicine (EMS). The nearest ER is at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, located 25 miles away in Aberdeen. Per state law, our department also often transports stroke or heart attack patients to a hospital with a higher level of care in Olympia.

VOLUNTEER WITH OSFD
OSFD is a combination department with career and volunteer personnel working together to provide outstanding service to the citizens we protect. If you have a desire to become involved with OSFD as a volunteer, stop by our station to pick up an application. As a volunteer, you will become an important part of our operational response team and trained to the level of firefighter 1 and EMT-basic. We also accept entry level EMS or Firefighter volunteers who have current certifications.
To become a volunteer with OSFD you need to be at least 18 years of age, fill out an application and complete three "ride alongs" to get to know the inner workings of the department. After that, an oral board interview and physical exam are administered. Once the interview and physical are passed, the applicants are moved forward to a background check and medical examination before obtaining membership.
Volunteers are then required to work a minimum of 48 hours a month, maintain their medical certification through continuing education and attend training.
Membership benefits include a monthly stipend based on hours of work and participation. In addition, there are many available training opportunities.
